Knowing when to let go
Know your industry - Be Realistic - Create payment Channels - Make Connections - KNOW WHEN TO LET GO
When all is said and done, you’ve tried your best and spoken to the right people, sometimes it just still wont work out. It may be because your music isn’t as good as you thought it was (a common mistake) or it may be that other factors have played a part and it just isn’t going to work right now. When that happens, it’s important not to keep on banging on peoples doors and trying to ‘make them realise’ how good your music is. Sometimes it’s worth just leaving the track for now and maybe revisiting it in a year’s time, by then you’ll have a fresh perspective, probably more skill and more understanding of why it didn’t work.
Knowing when to let go is a key skill to learn and it enables you to move onto new material that is often better than the last work anyway. However, if you have a passion for music, then you shouldn’t just let that go at the first sign of failure. Many people work for many years before they start to really earn any money from music, and then there are others who keep trying and trying to push something and don’t realise that letting go of that particular thing can often free them up to be successful in another area, even if it’s still closely related. So understanding the difference between letting something go, and using the experience to move you forward is all part and parcel of being able to earn money from music and keep you focused.
These 5 principles are not hard and fast rules and there are other things to consider as well, but if you follow these steps you should be well on your way to understanding how to make a living from music and being able to balance the creativity of your work with the commercial element to the job.
