Make Connections
Know your industry - Be Realistic - Create payment Channels - MAKE CONNECTIONS - Know when to let go
It’s a cliché really, but the old adage about ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ is certainly true in the music industry as much as it is in other areas of business. There’s a huge amount you can achieve on your own now, but every now and again you’ll find that you need to go and actually meet someone, or you’ll just come across someone occasionally who can help you. It’s in these moments that key decisions can be made and the success or failure of your music career can be affected. Making a good impression on somebody is so important because there are so many wannabe writers, artists, producers out there that you need to have an edge over the competition. If you want to earn from your music then you’ll need to be able to get it to the right people at the right time.
If you feel like talking to people isn’t your strong point, or you struggle to make connections, then one option is to consider a manager. It’s a big step getting a manger on board, as they will normally take 20% of everything you earn from music, but they can be useful to help you get your tracks out there and to help you negotiate with people without coming across as desperate yourself.
Use each of your contacts to make more contacts, and try to only bother people if you really have something good to show them. Don’t call someone you met once out of the blue and tell them your working on an awesome backing track, wait until it’s finished and your happy with it and then go about finding out who might be the best person to call. Sometimes you only get 1 chance to speak to someone, make sure that you use it well.
However, there is one final skill to learn and that's knowing when to let go.
