Earning a Living from Music

5 Principles to Follow

Making a living in any creative industry is hard work, for many people it proves too hard and in the end they just give up.  It can sometimes be a difficult balance between your creative side and your business attitude, whilst you don’t want to ‘sell out’ completely you still want to be rewarded for the work that’s been invested. These two sometimes-conflicting approaches are rarely successful without each other and projects that are purely ‘creative’ tend to suffer, as much as projects that are purely ‘commercial’. It is important to understand when and how to try and create an income from your creative output.

This article sets out 5 key principles to help you make money from your work and helps you avoid the classic traps that people fall into.

1. Know your Industry

2. Be Realistic

3. Create Payment Channels

4. Make Connections

5. Know when to let go
